Top First Base Baseball Drills

Key First Base Drills

  • The Stretch & Footwork: Instead of the traditional right-foot-on-the-base stretch, straddle the base, pivot, and stretch towards the ball for extra reach.

  • Forehand & Backhand Picks: Practice picking the ball cleanly with forehand and backhand techniques, starting on your knees, then one knee, and finally on your feet.

  • Glove-less Picks: Straddle the base and practice picking the ball without a glove, alternating between forehand and backhand, focusing on a clean, short motion through the ball.

  • Ladder Drills: Shuffle laterally, alternating forehand and backhand picks, gradually increasing speed and incorporating a coach to throw balls.

  • Double Play Turns: Practice popping off first base, fielding a ground ball, and turning towards second base over your left shoulder for a quick throw.

  • Feeds to First Base: When no one is on base, play deeper and practice feeding the ball to the pitcher covering first, ensuring you follow your throw with your hand pointing towards the base.

These drills cover essential aspects of playing first base, from improving reach and reaction time to ensuring accurate throws and quick double play turns.
