In baseball, mastering the basics can significantly impact game outcomes. This drill, led by Coach Grossman from Coaching Youth Baseball, focuses on teaching young players the correct techniques for running through and rounding first base, crucial for avoiding outs and advancing plays.

First Base Running Techniques for Baseball

Key First Base Running Drills

  • Running Through First: When the coach points left, players sprint through the base, veering slightly to the right to avoid any ambiguity about heading to second. They should decelerate towards right field with small, quick steps.

  • Rounding First: When signaled right, players take a banana route, hitting the inside corner of the base with their right foot and heading directly to second. Coaches might use a cone a few feet before first base to guide the curve.

Properly rounding first base can prevent players from being tagged out at second due to a wide turn. Players must learn to make a good inside turn.

Perfecting these techniques ensures players make informed decisions, potentially turning singles into doubles and preventing unnecessary outs. These skills are essential for competitive play and can substantially impact a team’s success.
