In this guide, we will discuss baseball fielding techniques, focusing on the proper fielding stance and what to do before fielding a ground ball or catching a ball. We’ll cover pre-pitch positioning, the ready position, and fielding techniques, ensuring players are locked in and ready for every play. These drills are designed for baseball players, coaches, and parents aiming to improve their fielding skills.

Key Fielding Drills & Tips:

  • Pre-Pitch Position: Practice the “hop” to stay light on your feet and ready to move in any direction as the pitch is delivered.

  • Proper Stance: Elbows on knees, hands darted out front, ensuring the butt is out and the body is low.

  • The Alligator: Teach young players the “alligator” method (one hand over the other) for secure two-handed catches.

  • Line Drill: Stay on the right side of the line until fielding, moving right-left to gain momentum toward first base.

  • Three Cone Drill: Work around cones, timing the ball so it hits the glove as the left foot lands.

  • Paddle Drill: Use a paddle to teach players to secure the ball with two hands, focusing on stopping the ball rather than catching it.

  • Backhand Drill: Take deeper angles on hard-hit balls to the right, ensuring the glove works back through the ball’s direction.

Proper fielding involves being attentive and prepared for every pitch. By incorporating these drills, players can improve their readiness, technique, and overall fielding performance.
