First base is a crucial position in baseball, often bailing out infielders with tough throws. This video explains the defensive positioning and general tips to excel as a first baseman.

Key Positioning and Techniques

  • No Runners On: Play deep to cover ground, adjusting based on your speed. Sprint to the base upon the ball being hit, find the base, and stretch toward the throw.

  • Runner on First: Position your right foot near the corner of the bag, opening your hips. After the pitcher’s motion, shuffle and get ready for the play.- Runner on First and Second: With less than two outs, play behind the runner, going to second on a ground ball, then back to first. With two outs, back up to cover more ground.

  • Bases Loaded: With less than two outs, play in front of the runner to go home on a ground ball, then back to first. With two outs, back up to cover more ground.

  • Cutoff Responsibilities: For balls hit to center and right field, act as the cutoff, positioning between the baseball and home plate, following the catcher’s instructions.

  • Advanced Tip: Straddle the base, wait for the throw, pivot, and step toward the ball for an extra stretch.

  • Picking Balls Out of the Dirt: Stretch low, keep your eyes behind the glove, and work from the ground up, aiming for the shortest hop possible.

Always prioritize catching the ball, even if it means leaving the base. Assess the game situation before attempting risky plays.
