Welcome to Bullpen Sessions! Today, Coach Chris is with Coach Renz from Wren’s Baseball Academy at Loganville Christian Academy to discuss youth pitching for ages 5 to 12. They will cover throwing warm-ups, drills, mechanics, pick-off moves, pitching grips, and how to self-correct.

Coach Renz shares his background, including being drafted by the Chicago White Sox and his 30+ years of experience running his indoor training facility.

Warm-up Drills

  • No Stride Drill: Focus on shoulder turn and spin, 10-15 feet apart.

  • Knee Drill: Back knee down, shoulders squared, emphasizing follow-through.

  • Quick Hop: Partners throw to chest, quick right-left throw, moving back each time.

  • Crow Hop: Catch, bigger hop with right foot, step-step throw, aiming for the partner’s chest.

The coaches introduce young players Dylan and Rhett, who demonstrate the drills. They cover rotation drills, knee drills for both righties and lefties, hop drills, and crow hop drills, emphasizing proper form and follow-through.

The session progresses from short hops to Pro hops and long tosses, gradually increasing intensity and distance. It’s emphasized to maintain a line drive throw rather than a rainbow arc to avoid arm drag.
