Effective Base Running Progressions for Baseball Teams

Key Drills and Tips

  • Running Through First Base: Players sprint hard, hitting the front of the base, and immediately look to their right to assess the ball’s position. For younger players, use a cone beyond first base to ensure they run all the way through.

  • Rounding First Base: Simulate hitting the ball into the gap. Runners angle toward a coach or target up the line from first base, rounding the base, and leaning their inside shoulder for better control.

  • First to Third Base: Players touch the inside of second base and pick up the third base coach’s signals early (about 2/3 to 3/4 of the way to second base) to decide whether to advance.

  • Leads at First Base: Players step off with their left foot, then right, followed by two side shuffles, maintaining focus on the pitcher. They then take a secondary lead and react to a simulated base hit.

  • Stealing Bases: Practice straight steals off the pitch, with players reading the pitcher’s cues to determine whether to advance or not.

  • Leads at Second Base: Start behind the base and creep in, enhancing reaction time. Starting deeper provides a better angle when heading to third.

  • Leads at Third Base: Players read balls off the bat, tagging up on fly balls, and advancing on ground balls, while also being mindful of the catcher.

These drills provide a comprehensive approach to improving your team’s base running abilities, covering essential techniques and decision-making skills.
